Hold on a sec, I wanted to take a minute and discuss something. Everybody knows about the 'new' garage rock band movement making it's way across the nation, even the world. I'm talking The Strokes, The Vines, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The White Stripes and The Hives. Back in 1996 PEARL JAM released the often 'most despised Pearl Jam' album called No Code. When I first heard it, I thought it was pretty ground breaking, despite it being an arena/70's rock inspired affair. But hey, which one of these new garage rock bands aren't? They were ahead of their time (or back in time) and nobody gave them the credit for it. Look at songs like Sometimes and Red Mosquito, great heavy guitar laden songs that took little notice. If anybody get's a chance, go get this album (which I actually like better than Yield or Binaraul).

The Mits. I've been tweaking the picture on and off over the last couple of weeks, but I can't get the geometry of the conversion grids. I'm going to have to wait till after I move out of this place before have it ISF Calibrated. Besides, they require at least a 3-4 month break in period before they begin. Otherwise, the picture is beautiful. The main problem though, especially watching 480 Progressive material on DVD, is the MPEG2 compression artifacts in the picture. Since the material is progressive scan, any small blemishes in the picture quality can be seen and projected. From what i've read about the authoring process, some studios actually monitor the entire movie and adjust the level of compression per scene as opposed to giving the entire disc a flat rate. The same compression is comparable to the JPEG picture format.
Digital Cable TV? Time Warner is a joke. The picture is noisy, and even if the Mistubishi can convert 480 Interlaced image to 960p, you still see everything bad about the picture. I signed up for the Time Warner High-Def Cable, but they said there's a three month waiting list and the only channels available in High-Definition is HBO-HD and Showtime-HD. Apparently, the studios that send HBO-HD their movies, author the content straight from the prints in all it's 1080i glory. Hubba hubba. Can't wait.

Lord of the Ring-a-thon! Man, since the release of LOTR last Tuesday, i've seen the movie (albiet, in bite size chunks) about fifteen times. Last night, we went to a little get together at Melody's where we watched LOTR again. Still can't get enough of that film! Anyways, nothing else be happening, except that the Rat Pack (i.e. Mike/Joe) want to head to Kruez Market in Lockheart tomorrow. Smoked brisket, chops and rings...yuuuummmmmm. Vegetarians beware.

"Oh. I don't handle money." What do you get when you mix New Jersey and one Vietnamese? Tony Roma's Ribs on a Monday night! Went to eat dinner with the entire population of New Jersey last night (which included Emily's parents), but the guest of honor, Father Bill, made a no show. I didn't get a chance to taste any of Tony's Ribs, but from what I could tell, they were ribs. But man, did that French Onion Soup with the inch thick mozarella topping sure look good! Good times, good times.
Afterwards, we cruised to the Marble Slab cellulite house for a heaping of some Ice Cream. We had the Cheese Cake Ice Cream, which was basically a scoop of sweetened lard. Tasty, none the less. Oh yeah, the Heath topped ice cream cone was THE BOMB!
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings DVD comes out today, in all it's 3-hour glory. It'll be nice to relive the classic tale of Hobbits and Trolls any day of the week--doh! forgot, I live with two Hobbits and Trolls!

Weekend recap. After our company lunch, Dave and I booked back to my place so we could check out the new TV (see below..yeah, way below). He supplied some ice cold beers (thanks dude) and we chilled out watching some DVD's. Unfortunately, the sickness came rushing down on me and he mentioned that we go check out Audio Systems. Not one to refuse a visit to one of our favorite local Hi-Fi shops, we went. There's this guy who works there, Rice (who we've become friends with over the years and typically let's us mess with $12,000 worth of speakers and tube gear) wasn't there. That didn't stop us from putting our greasy fingers on everything.
Afterwards, my failing health became to tumble down upon me. Luckily, Emily came by to take care of me. Spiking all my drinks with Vitamin C and calling my sudden case of delirium and exhaustion an excuse to get out of watching Some Like it Hot. =P I'll be the first to admit that that wasn't the case. I'm pretty sure small parasites were eating my intestines from the inside out.
Anyways, the next thing I remember is waking up Saturday morning and everything felt much better (thanks of course, to Emily!). Wally was getting blind from the steady and gradual blurring of his monitor and wanted to get a new one. We went up to Fry's but they had no good deals at the time so he opted not to get one for the time being. We went up to Austin Books again, and who do we run into? Dames, Mike "Spider" Nguyen, Mike's fiance and Brian. The odd's of comic book geeks running into each other on the same day? = Astronomical. Yet, it happened.
For the rest of Saturday, it was a nice relaxing evening haning out over at Emily's apartment and watching enough Trading Spaces to convince me that my balls have shrunk. =P hahah just kidding--of course i'll never admit I like that show!! DOH!
My co-worker Dave in front of the Ghetto Home Theater. Watch out ladies, he's married. Oh yeah, none of my equipment is THX Certified. It's what we call in the industry: The Dramatic Effect. |
